Is the Sheraton coming to Sri Lanka?

While the Sri Lankan government has announced that a Sheraton hotel is coming up in Colombo, the India-based ITC Group – with whom the government is negotiating with – is yet to confirm the plan.
"Whilst we have expressed interest in building a premium green ITC Hotel in Sri Lanka, we are unable to offer any comments at the moment, until we receive a formal intimation," a spokesperson for ITC Hotels, part of the ITC Group, told the Business Times in an email communication.

Recently the government announced that ITC of India, a franchise of SHERATON Group of USA, is to invest in a luxury hotel and mixed development project in Colombo. The statement from the Indian company is also unclear as to whether this is a Sheraton branded property or a solely ITC hotel.
ITC Hotels owns and manages over 110 hotels in over 90 destinations in India, in addition to have a marketing franchise with US-based Starwood Hotels which owns the Sheraton brand.

Meanwhile Singapore-based Starwood Asia Pacific Hotels & Resorts, in response to reports of the Sheraton hotel coming up in Colombo, has said in a statement that “while we are in discussions with different owners and developers to manage a number of hotel projects in Sri Lanka including Colombo under several of Starwood’s brands, Starwood is not involved or aware of the aforementioned discussions and they are strictly between ITC and the Sri Lankan government.”
