All night parties with MICA

‘Mica’ is the name of the latest musical outfit to bang into the local music scene. Led by experienced musician Lakmal Fernando, ‘Mica’ band is one of the most sought out groups in the pub style venues.
‘We provide uncommon songs and music to the audiences, the difference is, ‘Mica’music is filled with the real acoustic and drum sounds. We use a new instrument call ‘KAHON’ (AFRIKAN DRUM). Mica is the very first western band in Sri Lanka use KAHON’ said leader Lakmal.

This four piece band runs with three fantastic and experienced voices of three brothers and a female singer with a range of different instruments. Classical guitar, bass guitar, Kahon, flute, mouth organ, still guitar and percussion section are some of the out of box instruments they use on stage.

‘We are catering to all types of audiences although mainly our music is enjoyed by the young adults and adults. We provide Country songs, Retro music of 70’s/80’s era, R& B, classical jazz and new hit songs from the charts too. Also we sing some alternative rock songs in our own stlye. Our own versions of hit songs are what we really enjoy and It is great to know that the crowds too are enjoying the sessions’ Lakmal explained.

‘Mica’ comes alive in action at the Breeze Bar at the Cinnamon Grand on Mondays, Heist Bar of the Continental Hotel on Tuesdays, Water’s Edge on Sundays, Excel World on Saturdays and SSC Club House on Friday nights.

‘Apart from that we, play concerts and other outside gigs and functions’ said Lakmal. ‘The name Mica is a French word for mineral stone. When I was in Europe I have performed with a French band called ‘Mica’ and I was determined to start my own project in Sri Lanka with the same name’ he explained.
Lakmal popularly known as Lucky is a singer guitarist, composer and a sound engineer by profession. He performed with the band Purple Rings and toured many Middle East countries, Europe, Thailand and Singapore.

The lead singer Nalin Fernando is also a talented percussionist and he plays Kahon, the African drums for Mica. Nalin has years of experience behind him as amusicain and he was with Dream Team, Rajiv and the Clan, Cosmic Rays and have performed with Kasun Kalhara and Amal Perera too in their productions.

Dhanushka Uyanhewa is the female vocalist of the band and she started her music career in 1999 with the band ‘Cherish’ and followed by ‘Inspirations’. She plays still guitar, flute and mouth organ.

Bassist Krishanthe Fernando is an all rounder. He plays bass, keyboards for Mica Unplugged band.
‘He was with me in Purple Rings’ during late 90’s and has travelled with me to Europe and most of the overseas events too’ Lakmal said.

‘Our next step is to create our own songs and we have already started working towards this’ he added.
