In addition another meet record and a new Sri Lankan record were established after the end of first day where a total of 56 events took place in six different age groups.

Silva, competing in the Under-18 discus throw event cleared a distance of 37.56 metres bettering the existing record set by Deepika Rodrigo in 1980. Rodrigo then representing Anuradhapura Central set the record by throwing a distance of 34.82 metres while Silva after 31 years achieved an extra 2.74 metres to renew the record. Silva had a clear 10-metre advantage from the rest of the competitors as second placed R. Tharshika coming all the way from Vavuniya covered 27.26 metres. Hansini Jayanath was placed third with a distance of 26.97 metres.

W. K. L. A. Nimali, representing Sri Lanka Air Force clocked 10 minutes and 31.26 seconds to beat the previous record set by her team mate Eranga Dilrukshi a month earlier at the same venue. Nimali who was placed second to Dilrukshi in last month’s meet scrapped the previous national record by 6.31 seconds to claim the new record. During last month’s Junior Nationals Dilrukshi bettered her own record by clocking 10:37.57.

Late entrant Poornima Kalpani of Loyala College, Kochchikade covered a distance of 4.82 metres to set a new meet record in the Under-14 long jump finals as lasses from Sumana Balika, Ratnapura, Ratnayake Central, Walala and Air Force SC took major honours while favouring their chances of clinching this year’s championship on a dull opening day.

Sumana Balika dominated much of the track events grabbing the wins of 100 metres hurdles finals in both Under-18 and 20 age categories while also coming on top by winning the 800 metres finals in both age groups. They also won the javelin throw final of the Under-20 age group. They also placed at two finals.

Lasses of Air Force SC won at senior age categories as they went on to clinch the Under-20 shot putt and triple jump finals. They also clinched the women’s discus throw and 800 metres finals.
Ratnayake Central Walala however swept most events of the junior age groups while placing themselves at four finals. Their runners swept the first three places of the 800 meters final in the Under-16 age group. The meet will conclude today.
