Four die in dawn bus crash

By R.S. Keeriyawatte

Four people were killed and 36 injured when a bus carrying garment factory workers collided head on with a passenger bus at Kribathkumbura at 6.30 a.m. yesterday, police said.

They said investigations indicated that the accident took place when the bus carrying garment workers was trying to overtake a lorry at a bend.

The 27-year-old driver of the bus carrying the garment workers and three passengers in it were killed.
The bus had left from Hemmathagama in Mawanella picking up workers employed at a garment factory in Aniwatte.

Police officers who recorded statements from eye witnesses said the factory bus was overtaking the flour lorry coming from Colombo when the collision with the Colombo-bound bus from Matale occurred. Villagers rushed to the scene and evacuated the passengers from the two mangled buses.

Hospital officials said last night that the condition of two of the injured people who were being treated at the Peradeniya and Kandy hospitals was critical. Chief Inspector M.D.K. Bandara of Peradeniya police is conducting inquiries.
