Goodbye dear friend

Steve de Silva, popularly known as local Michael Jackson for his MJ dance acts and singing style, passed away at a private hospital in Colombo last Wednesday after a brief illness. Steve is the elder son of the two sons of popular singer and Baila Maestro Desmond de Silva and Deanna de Zilwa.

Steve lost his battle with Cancer during the early hours of Wednesday. He had taken ill at the tail end of December last year and later diagnosed with the dreaded disease, his mother Deanna said.

Apart from his singing career, Steve was a popular journalist at the now defunct Sun newspaper.

Steve joined the Independent News Papers as a cub reporter in 1985 and stayed with the Group for a short time but later decided to follow his fathers’ foot steps and entered the music scene where he performed at top venues reaching the top in the local music scene during the 80’s. He later formed his own music band ‘Go Public’ and performed at all top venues and concerts. He was popular for his MJ acts and songs.

He also did solo appearances in several foreign capitals that include Melbourne, London, Oman and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in West Asia. Apart from his parents, he leaves his wife Ioma, three-year-old daughter Megan, brother Sean and sister Jacqueline.
