Police hunt for 2 more kidnappers

Police are hunting for two more soldiers, part of a five-member gang, who abducted a wealthy Tamil businessman and demanded a ransom of Rs 50 million for his release, Director- Colombo Crimes Division, SP D.R.L. Ranaweera told the Sunday Times. He confirmed that Police were able to recover the Rs. 20 million ransom paid.

Among those arrested is a Lance Corporal from the Special Forces attached to the Seeduwa Camp, not a Major, as reported in the Sunday Times last week, Military spokesman Maj. Gen Ubhaya Medawala said.

Meanwhile, the Jewellery Owners’ Association on Thursday met with Colombo DIG H.M.D. Herath to discuss the abduction of the businessman, among other issues. President of the Association, K. Radhakrishan told the Sunday Times that the Police have agreed to deploy men in civvies in the Sea Street area to prevent further abductions.

The wealthy businessman was abducted from Green Lane, Kotahena, and later released, after he promised to get the money for them. The suspects had collected Rs. 20 million as part payment, at a leading private hospital, and were walking out when they were apprehended.
