Weaving memories

Among that collection of amazing and individual talent that made up the ’43 Group, still regarded with something akin to awe, was one whose skills were different. True he was a painter, like the rest but it was for his incisive satirical cartoons that Aubrey Collette was famous. There were few political figures who escaped Collette’s pen and Prime Ministers and ordinary people all, they valued his wit and humour, scathing though it may have been.

 

Lapping up the luxury and the view on Nilaveli beach

We arrive, bolt down our lunch, change our clothes and head out to sea. We have been on the road since 4 a.m, but the bracing breeze and the sea spray is wonderfully reviving. Ahead, Pigeon Island rises out of the water. Beside me in the boat is Henry Logan-Smith, front office manager at the Pigeon Island Resort. We spend the next few hours exploring the beautiful island, dotted with aloe vera plants and blooming orange sea shoe flowers.
