Eagles pip Lions 18-15

St. Anthony’s pipped Trinity 18-15 in a close battle of the Singer Under 20 Division 1 A inter-schools rugby match played at Nittawela yesterday. The Antonians who came into the game as the underdogs led 10-0 at lemons.

Antonians made up their points through three tries and a drop goal to a goal a try and a penalty by the Trinitians. St. Anthony’s took an early lead with tries from centre Dinuk Jayawera and No 8 Sanka Rajaguru with both conversions going astray. The second half saw Trinity reducing the lead through a try by skipper and flanker Damith Dissanayake and later took over the lead from a try by No 8 Shannon Anthony which was converted by centre Kanchana Ramanayake.

Trinity went further ahead through a penalty booted over by Kanchana but St. Anthony’s struck back to make it 15 a piece when winger D. Ariyapala went over for a try.Skipper Tharindu helped the Antonians take over the lead with a drop goal and Trinity who got an opportunity of drawing the match failed to take advantage when Kanchana fluffed a penalty offered in the dying stages of the match.
