UDA files missing: CID called

Files relating to approvals granted by the Urban Development Authority (UDA) for the construction of high-rise buildings have gone missing. Criminal Investigation Department (CID) detectives probing how officials violated rules and regulations made the discovery.

The Government ordered the investigations after reports that some officials had made hundreds of millions granting approvals for the construction of condominium apartments and commercial buildings. Approvals had been granted to construct apartments or buildings beyond the specified limits for different sectors of the city. Detectives have already questioned several UDA officials. However, the absence of the files is preventing them from tracking down the masterminds who had made money.

Besides UDA's final approval, construction of high rise buildings in Colombo require clearance from the Ministry of Defence and the Presidential Security Range. During the recent Cabinet changes after the parliamentary elections, the President put the UDA under the Ministry of Defence.
