Visakhians do their bit for the school

“Visakhians in Concert 2010”, a variety show organised by the Visakha Vidyalaya Old Girls’ Association will be held on Saturday, January 30, from 6.30 p.m. onwards at the Jeremias Dias Hall, Visakha Vidyalaya, Colombo.

The concert is being organized to raise funds for the much-needed refurbishment of the senior school library with all the performers being past Visakhians who have volunteered their talents in aid of the OGA.

The programme includes dance, music and drama. Twins Aloka Kumbukage and Anuradha Vithanage will open the show with the traditional Pooja dance and this will be followed by the traditional Manipuri by Jayawanthi Panibharatha and her students, folk dances by Priyadashini Bandara and students, Bharatha natyam by Sandya Bamunuwita, Kandyan dance with a modern flavour by Visha de Silva, her daughter Shakila Vindya and supporting artistes, whilst Upuli Wijewardena and her troupe will provide her signature Oriental items and Shonaka Ranatunga the western and contemporary touch.

Soprano Menaka Sahabandu, the nightingales of Sinhala songs Visharadha Champa Kalhari and Sachini Pieris of Sirasa Super Star fame will perform and Meena Kumari better known for her acting prowess will be singing numbers from her latest CD.

Cellist Savithri Jayatilleka will present her students in an all cello orchestra and among the melodies would be the theme from “Dr Zhivago” with Savithri at the piano.

Geethika Chandrasiri, Nilupul Silva and Samadhi Tennakoon on piano, violin and congo drums would be an unusual treat, whilst yet another Visakhian Helani Pieris would show her drumming prowess on the davula and dole.

A skit from the stage drama “Gajaman Puwath” with Rathmalie Gunasekera, a past Visakhian in the role of Gajaman Nona is another highlight of the evening. The Visakha choir trained by Vajira Nanayakkara which won many accolades at the recent Festival of Choirs will round off the evening with a medley of popular songs.
