Capturing the nostalgia of Christmas

It’s that time of the year again. Bit by bit, the city comes alive with lights, ribbons and decorations. Seasonal songs ease their way into the radio air waves, and you catch yourself tapping your feet and humming Christmas carols almost involuntarily. Before you realize it, you’re caught up with the hustle, bustle and the veritable spirit that Christmas brings along with it.

And what better way to start off the month with some good old fashioned festive cheer, while retaining the true essence of the season?

“These are the early days of the festive season and this concert is ideal for people who are nostalgic about Christmas,” says Jith Pieris, Director of Its Christmas time in the city – Silver bells, a seasonal musical.

“I’m very happy to be a part of this,” says Menaka de Fonseka Sahabandu, choir director of the Menaka Singers. “The concert is in aid of charity. While having a good time, it’s always good to remember the spirit of the season and give back. It’s a nice gesture on the part of the children.”

According to young soloist Natalya Gunaratne anyone coming for the concert can leave content knowing that something good comes out of the proceeds. Natalya will be performing “I’ll be home for Christmas,” “Santa Baby’ as well as one of her original songs and will be accompanied by Eshantha Peiris.

Singing trio, Saveeta de Alwis, Dmitri Gunatilake and Trudy Herft, while singing with the Menaka Singers, will also be performing a medley of Christmas songs on their own.

“It’ll be a repertoire of a lot of Christmas stuff and will get you into the mood of Christmas,” said Trudy. The trio emphasized on the fact that there were a lot of different people getting together for the concert which made it even more special. “And it’s not just that. We’ve enjoyed preparing for it,” smiles Saveeta.
The concert promises to entice music and dance lovers with a varied line up of performers.

The night will see the likes of Soul sounds, Noeline Honter, the Menaka Singers, old Joes Choir, Eshantha de Andrado and Natasha Ratnayake and a lineup of many more singers lending their voices to the show. With the Kevin Nugera Latin dancers setting the stage alive with a Jingle bell jive, a piano duet by Soundarie David and Menaka de Fonseka Sahabandu, and other performers geared to take the stage, the show certainly promises to be a night of seasonal cheer and live up to its name. “They’re definitely in for a very nice evening of music,” added Menaka elaborating about what the audience can expect at the concert. “And at the end of the day it’s going for charity, which makes it even nicer.” Its Christmas time in the city – Silver bells, a seasonal musical, goes on board on December 5 at the Ladies College Hall at 7.30pm. Proceeds from the concert will be used for charity.

Tickets for the concert can be obtained at Park Street Mews – 50/1, Park Street, Colombo 02.
