A Navy player holds onto the ball as CR defence is converging on him.
CR and FC opened the floodgates in the second half to defeat the Navy by 32 points (3 goals, 1 try, 1 penalty and a drop goal) to 10 (1 goal and a penalty) in the Caltex league rugby game at Longden Place yesterday. At the breather CR led 13-3.

Until then the Navy gave the red shirts a torrid time and it was only after the introduction of Navy’s Namal Rajapaksa and Samantha Lakshan that the sailors got going. One wonders why they were not included in the team from the beginning.

CR scored first when winger Nuwan Chamara unleashed a power packed run to score a try followed by link-man Srinath Suriyabandara and CR just nosed ahead at the breather.

CR got going in the second half with a series of sweeping moves and the tries were scored by stand off Devanand and winger Mohammed Jabbar. Devanand showed good prowess as a kicker by converting three goals, the penalty and the drop goal as well.Navy’s points were scored by Namal Rajapakse who came in as a substitute at No 8 and Samantha Lakshan, the former Havelocks player now playing under Navy colours. Navy’s solitary penalty was put over by Nuwan Hettiarachchi.
