Celebrating diversity

French photographer Philippe Salaun’s exhibition ‘Femmes du Monde’ will be on display at the Alliance Francaise in Colombo from June 12 to 28.

For his exhibition here, he will feature portraits of women, from over a dozen different nationalities.

Salaun explains his choice, “The series ‘Femmes du Monde’ (Women of the world) was not a premeditated one, I simply gathered photos that I captured during my travels and when visiting my home town in Brittany. I have no other intention but to celebrate the force and the diversity of women through my photos captured by chance over the past 30 years.

“ I shall leave it up to the public who will see these photos to give a meaning to each of them or to the entire collection.”

Salaun’s fascination with photography began when he saw an exhibition in Le Havre, organized by the German magazine Stern. “It changed my life...It was like an illumination! I realized what photography could be!”

Having the good fortune to meet well known photographer Robert Doisneau who became a good friend, Salaun became his photo printer and from then his career was on an upward spiral.

“Due to this successful collaboration I got the opportunity to become the photo printer of many well known photographers of the 20th century, Willy Ronis, Sabine Weiss, Izis, Seydou Keyta, and so many others,” Salaun says.

This will be his first trip to Sri Lanka and he says he is curious and eager to share his passion with students and aspiring photographers.
