Fancied cueists make steady progress - Colombo District Snooker Championship

Fancied cueists made steady progress on day three of the Colombo District snooker championship which is being played at the Billiards and Snooker Association headquarters in Reid Avenue.

The district snooker championship conducted by the Billiards and Snooker Association of Sri Lanka (BSASL) is being held concurrently in three other districts namely Nuwara Eliya, Kandy and Galle.

The first round matches saw some interesting games with favourite lifting the title W.M. Naushad of The Cue Club was given a fright before he brushed aside the challenge offered by P. Weerasinghe of Police - by two frames to one.

In all 244 cueists are participating in the four district tournaments with Colombo fielding the highest of 121, followed by Kandy 63, Nuwara Eliya 38 and Galle 22.

The first and second round matches up to the quarter finals will be played over three frames while the semi finals and final will be contested over five frames. The semi finals are scheduled to be played on June 8 from 2.00 p.m. onwards.

After the completion of these tournaments the All Island Lanka Plate championship is scheduled to begin on June 12. 40 cueists are due to contest which comprises of the top players of the district tournaments in the fray.

Colombo will see 16 advancing to the All Island tournament with eight from Kandy and four each from Nuwara Eliya and Galle districts with eight relegated players joining them. The tournament will end with the snooker nationals which are scheduled to be played in early July.
