A thought for Vesak

By Amara Samarathunga

On this thrice blessed day
Let us all contemplate....
At least for a few minutes
Surveying all round
In our mind's eye
Ah! We see evils in abundance....

Due mainly to anger, greed and ignorance.
Let us now try to breathe out these evils
And breathe in kindness, generosity and wisdom.
Shall we take them, one by one....
To cast aside an ounce of greed
And drink a pound of generosity.

To fling away at least, a teaspoon of anger,
And breathe in one full table spoon of kindness,
To brush aside an inch of ignorance
And build up a yard of wisdom,
Furthermore - do away a millimetre
of impatience
And accept a full metre of patience.

Try to avoid criticising others.
Instead delve into your own mind
Do recognise and praise others for their good.
And blame yourself for your faults
Bereft of your beauty, wealth or learning
Paving the way to bring peace and harmony to our motherland.
