Two arrested after girl’s body found in pit

By Gamini Mahadura

Two women were arrested last night over the killing of a 10-year-old girl whose body was found in an abandoned pit in Nugekanda, Akmeemana.

Thanuja Kaveen

The girl, Thanuja Ayrangani, went missing along with a two-year-old boy Kaveen Jayasinghe from the neighbourhood.

Akmeemana police said close to the body of Thanuja they also found the tricycle the two children went to fetch from Kaveen’s home before they went missing.

Police said they believed the other child might also have been killed. Asked what the motive for the killings could be, the police said their investigations had revealed that there was dispute between a 64-year-old illicit liquor dealer and the parents of the two children. The man is avoiding arrest.
