A floral serendipity

The immortal lines by William Wordsworth come to mind- “What is this life if full of care, if we have no time to stand and stare! No time to stand beneath the boughs..”

Yes, Sri Lanka is blessed with an abundance of flora but do we really take the time to admire nature? Especially in Colombo where once large gardens have been transformed into multi-storey buildings and car parks. In today’s fast-emerging concrete jungle, flowers may soon become just pictures in books to most of us. Thus the appreciation of foliage and plants is something that needs to be cultivated.

The Shi-en Ikebana & Floral Art Society of Sri Lanka, the leading promoters of floral art and design will create an exhibition of floral artistry in Japanese Ikebana and Western styles for all nature lovers to enjoy. On view will be over 50 arrangements created by the society’s 70 members, some of whom are beginners and many who are well experienced floral artists.

‘Titled ‘ Serendipity’, the exhibition will use material and accessories found in the country and promises to highlight the unusual.

The exhibition to be held at the Lower Crystal Room of the Taj Samudra Hotel will be on May 3 and 4, with proceeds being channelled to the thalassaemia patients of the General Hospital, Badulla.
