Improving adolescent health in Sri Lanka

The Sri Lanka Girl Guides Association, together with the Family Planning Association of Sri Lanka, introduced an Adolescent Health Badge for Senior Guides in 2007. In a bid to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, the Adolescent Health programme carried out between March and September 2008, saw youth educating youth.

Essay competitions, creative writing competitions, drama competitions, and oratorical contests, based on the theme were held, together with the education of 500 female children.

Sixty Senior Guides who completed the Adolescent Health programme received awards, while a further 217 Senior Guides received participation certificates at the Chinthana Training Centre at Nainamadama on January 22, 2009.

The Senior Guides who took part in this challenge represented the Kandy and Matale Districts in the Central Province, the Ratnapura and Kegalle Districts in the Sabaragamuwa Province, the Galle and Matara Districts in the Southern Province, and Anuradhapura District in the North Central Province.

As part of the awards ceremony, the winner and runners-up of the oratorical contest presented their respective speeches.

The winner of the oratorical contest was Miss. R. M. Sakunika Rajapakse, a Senior Guide from 1st Ratnapura Senior Guide Company, Ferguson High School, Ratnapura.
