ACCA emphasizes greater sustainability reporting

The unprecedented global economic slowdown may have an impact on all global activities including global warming and sustainability initiatives.

President of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) Sri Lanka Nandika Buddhipala said they have diverted their efforts towards educating sustainability reporting through various seminar and workshops and supporting all local universities in their efforts towards teaching and research activities on sustainability.

Speaking at the ACCA Sustainability Reporting Awards 2008 held this week, Mr. Buddhipala said accountants need to put greater focus on sustainability reporting. In addition, leaders in companies need to align their organizations to the society in which they operate.

Four companies were rewarded at the award ceremony with Holcim Lanka winning in the large scale category and Union Assurance emerging the winner in the medium scale category. The runners up were Hatton National Bank in the large scale category and Union Assurance PLC in the medium scale category.

The panel of judges, headed by consultant Franklyn G. Amerasinghe, said Holcim was the only company to focus on the Decent Work Country Programme of the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the government. Holcim had comprehensively described the company’s commitment to sustainable development and the judges made special mention of its initiatives to document the inventory of flora and fauna in the rehabilitated quarry and surrounding areas. Union Assurance was highly commended for its efforts of measuring and curtailing key consumption areas.
