Art and craft exhibition

Around 80 to 100 paintings, items made with papier-mâché, dolls made with various throw away items, just to name a few, will all be on display and also for sale, when the students of Noeline Fernando present their works of art, next week.

The kids are between three and 15 years of age. An interesting exhibit on display by Sehuri Gunasekera (12), is of a woman sentenced to death. "So much bad is happening around us in the country and I feel that people need to be punished for the wrong they do," young Sehuri said speaking about her exhibit.

Most of the paintings have been done with the use of crayons and acrylics and are very colourful.

"On some days aunty tells me what I should draw and on some days I just draw and paint what I feel like," said little Janani Abeygunasekera (7) who, according to Ms. Fernando, when she starts to paint, never stops!

Damindri Fernando (13) was working on quite an interesting piece, using an old chocolate box with little rectangles cut out. "It's something I just felt like doing when I got the empty chocolate box," she said, of her creation.

These along with the rest of the exhibition of creative crafts will be held on March 28, 29 and 30, 2009 at the National Art Gallery, Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7.
