‘Sudu Hansayo’

Discusses problems in marriage

The tricky issue whether the proposed or love marriage is better and the tragic repercussions that follows when marriage is not successful is the theme of award winning teledrama director Chandana Hewapathirana’s latest miniplay ‘Sudu Hansayo’ now being telecast on television ITN every Saturday at 8.30 pm.

The miniplay on the timely theme is produced in the backdrop of record number of suicides reported mainly due to problems in love affairs and the teledrama highlights the tragedy of today’s younger generation which has no courage to face problems in lives.

This interesting story revolves around Bimsara, a somewhat philosophic who gets married to Subadra on a proposal brought by his mother. However Bimsara soon realizes that Subadra is not the suitable partner for him. Fed up of the marriage, the young man runs away from his house and starts to live alone in a rented house in Nuwara Eliya as a writer. There he meets a young girl, Nirmani and finds a good friend in her. Their friendship soon develops to an affair giving new hopes to Bimsara who was fed up of women and the marriage.

One day having seen a newspaper publication that Bimsara’s mother is very ill, he is forced to go back to his home and there the parents once again get Bimsara and Subadra to live together. Yet this does not last long. All his attempts to live peacefully fails and ends in a quarrel with his wife Subadra.

And Bimsara once again leaves his family and gets back to Nuwara Eliya and decides to divorce Subadra and get married to Nirmani. But this is prevented with the news that Subadra is pregnant. Thinking about the child, he decides to return to his family. But life with Subadra who does not heed to the advices of the parents become unbearable. He decides to asked for divorce from Subadra and gets married to Nirmani. But this creates more problems as Nirmani’s parents object.

What would be Bimsara’s decision? And what would happen to Subadra and the child? What would be the fate of Nirmani? are some of the questions that keeps the audience tagged to the telefilm. “What I want to discuss is how far is it justifiable for parents to get their children marry according to their (parents) wishes and let them suffer after that,” director Hewapathirana said.

“The living itself is facing problems and the answer to life’s problems is not death or suicide,” director who has earlier teledramas like ‘Adbutha Lampua’, ‘Sihina Pawura’ and ‘Hit Wicket’ which was nominated for eight award at State Teledrama Award in 2008 winning 2 awards to his credit, said.

The cast in ‘Sudu Hansayo’, include Ashen Manjula, Piyumi Shanika, Gihan Fernando, Chitra Wakista, Iresha Ranasinghe, Hemantha Iriyagama, Kusum Perera, Vishaka Jayaweera, Sithara Pavithrani, Gunawardena Hettiarachchi, Bhanu Kodikara, Sandamalee Anuradhanayake, Lanka Bandaranayake, Kumudini Sewwandhi, Prasanshani Jayaweera and Dhanushka Ratnayake.

In the technical team, art director is Sumathi Kudaligama and Udaya Samaratunga did editing. Make-up was by Priyantha Ishwara and musical score by Kapila Pugalarachchi. Together with Hewapathirana ‘Sudu Hansayo’ is produced by Prasanna Liyanage.
