A place to recover mentally and physically
By Gayani Perera

The most valuable thing in life today is one's health. Unfortunately however, at some point or another we are prone to various kinds of illnesses at some stage in our lives. Modern medicines have been most effective in providing us the treatments we require for many diseases however sometimes we may require certain physiotherapy and rehabilitation treatments for certain diseases to recover physically as well as mentally. The Oasis Hospital's Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation unit is providing outstanding services and has helped to bring back normalcy into the lives of many patients.

"What we at Oasis mainly focus on is to provide the very best medical service to all our patients and the hospital's Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation unit is no exception. For this we have a team of highly qualified staff members as well as one of the best Physiotherapist's from the Netherlands providing his services at our hospital. The hospitals rehabilitation unit caters to a wide range of diseases which include arthritis, paralysis, neck and back pains, sports injuries, muscle problems, post natal problems and obesity etc.

Patients suffering from chronic diseases such as arthritis and paralysis have today lost hope due to the severity of these diseases, where sometimes recovery rates are very low. Our physiotherapy unit has brought new hope to these patients who have experienced exceptional results through our services. We also have changed the lives of many patients suffering from sports injuries, where we were able to offer them treatments and help them return back to their sports careers. What we aim at through our physiotherapy unit is to provide patients exceptional physiotherapy treatments that will enable them to return back to their normal daily activities. Our services not only focus on a patients physical well being but also greatly focuses on improving a patients self confidence levels and thereby enabling them to overcome their fears and lead a normal life", says Mr. Ranjith Kulatunga, General Manager of Oasis Hospital.

The hospital's rehabilitation unit offers patients flexible treatment times. The rehabilitation unit is open to patients during the daytime and a patient has the ability to go through a full check up routine in order to find out what treatments they should undergo. The unit also provides patients the ability to seek treatments, whilst being hospitalized or receive treatments as out patients. The hospital also offers in-house physiotherapy treatments especially for patients coming from the outstation areas as well as daycare physiotherapy treatments, which is ideal for the elderly patients, where in which the children can leave their parents who require treatments at the hospital during the day.

Speaking to the Sunday Times, Mr. Frank Dorst, the hospitals physiotherapist said, "Physiotherapy that is introduced with a proper exercise regime can enable patients to recover much faster. We at the Oasis Hospital offers physiotherapy treatments in the form of shortwave heat, infra red heat which in most cases is used for the reduction of pain and other muscle spasms as well as ultrasound therapy to increase micro circulation. The heat treatments that we offer help to improve blood circulation in the joints as well as in the deeper tissues of the body. We also offer state-of-the-art exercise equipment to our patients, as a proper exercise regime is also an important factor in the recovery process."

We also spoke to some of the patients seeking treatment through the hospital's physiotherapy unit, to gain first hand accounts of their experiences. Pradeep Kumara, from Wattala said that he was previously employed overseas. He suffered from excruciating pain in his knees which later spread throughout his entire body. Pradeep had previously sought treatment for his problem from many places in Sri Lanka as well as in India but had been unsuccessful in getting a complete cure. Due to his complication Pradeep lost his job and was left helpless. Finally however he is currently undergoing treatment through the Oasis Hospital's physiotherapy unit and is more than satisfied with the results he is receiving.

He told us that he is feeling much better now with only two weeks of treatment and is confident of being fully cured. Pradeep also said that the treatment being offered to him is done through a very caring team of professionals which is another reason why he believes his recovery rate is improving. Another patient stated that she had looked far and wide for a relief for her arm pain which was worsening by the second. Just when she thought that all hope was lost, she underwent treatment at the Oasis Hospital and is currently recovering steadily.

Oasis Hospital offers the expertise and technology to help patients who require physiotherapy treatment achieve impressive results. The hospital's Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation unit has won the trust and confidence of many patients and have been successful in providing exceptional treatment that have helped many patients who had lost all hope to find a new lease on life.
