Golden Key depositors stage another protest

Several hundred depositors (some aged) of the now collapsed Golden Key Credit Card Company gathered at the company’s head office in Colombo this week and registered their protest over the non-payment of their deposits.

The depositors also marched to the office of Ceylinco Group Chairman, Lalith Kotelawala, chanting slogans against him and demanding that he repay their deposits without further delay, since he had promised to do so when he met depositors at the BMICH on December 23, 2008. Witnesses said officers from the Bambalapitiya Police attempted without success to disperse the crowd before the protestors reached Mr Kotelawala’s office.

Mr Kotelawala’s Legal Officer, Thushari Weerasinghe, addressing the large and restless crowd said the company was trying its best to dispose of the Golden Key assets in order pay the depositors. However, she stated that prior to doing this they have to terminate the employees and was looking into this aspect at the moment.
