Memorable tramcar ride into magical world of movies

That delightful raconteur Tissa Devendra’s piece on the tramcar was delicious reading.

True, Carl Muller may have painted
the tramcar in his racy style and
flavours, but then there weren’t any
boilers around for drivers to
indulge in their antics as
in the Yakada Yakas!

I remember my first tramcar ride.
My parents and I boarded the tram
at the Bo Gaha Handiya halt in Punchi
Borella, riding through the then narrow
streets (we could almost touch
roofs on both sides) on our way to
the Elphinstone Theatre.

Tra-La-La! It was my first ever,
as my Grandma would have said,
“Bioscope”! The movie was “Chandralekha”,
heralded with a flourish of fanfare by
the near-nude twins of the Gemini Studio
logo. Thus began an addiction
that I can never ever resist.
