The Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT) has dominated Sri Lanka's training industry for over 20 years, by offering undergraduate as well as postgraduate courses in addition to providing professional training to corporates and individuals. With the intention of broadening its training offerings IIT has formed a strategic partnership with Innova Strategies, which is headed by Dr. Madhu Fernando who specializes in the areas of Management Consulting and Project Management. Through this strategic alliance IIT is offering the unique opportunity to all professionals in the industry a chance to receive a Diploma in Project Management, which forms an integral part with regards to the functioning of any organization. The Sunday Times spoke to Mr. Ravi Dharmawardane, Consultant Programme Director of IIT and Dr, Madhu Fernando, CEO of Innova Strategies to find out the benefits provided to the participants of this course.

"The Diploma in Project Management offered at IIT will be a course of six-week duration and after completing this course a student will be able to register for the Project Management Professionals (PMP) Certification Programme offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI) in USA. Today the PMI has established itself as the governing body of project management professionals in the world. In order to register for the PMP Certification Programme a student has to have a 35-hour contact training, which will be covered through our Diploma Course as well as a host of other areas", says Mr. Dharmawardane.

Although the Diploma in Project Management is a lecture based course it is also an interactive diploma course, where a panel of project management professionals which will be headed by Dr. Madhu Fernando, will interact with the students in order to get their requirements in relation to their individual work places so as to understand the type of work that they are involved in. At the end of the course, therefore the students will be given the tools, methodologies as well as the best practice knowledge needed to successfully handle projects for the local organizations that they represent.

This diploma offered by IIT therefore will provide a student a two-fold advantage, which includes eligibility to sit for the PMP Certification as well as the interactive training they will receive in order to provide more productive solutions for their workplaces. In order to formalize its strategic partnership with Innova Strategies as well launch the Diploma in Project Management Course IIT held a special press conference on the 21st of January 2009.

Commenting on the benefits this course will offer participants, Dr. Fernando said, "The area of Project Management is never industrially specific, therefore it covers the entire scope of areas from IT to media etc. In the last two decades this subject has become immensely popular and can even be applied to our day-to-day lives. The course will cover all the fundamentals from the initiation of the project to its sign off stage. Whilst most of the courses available at present cover only the theoretical part of project management, what is so unique however about the course offered through IIT is the fact that this course will be aligned with the practical aspect of applying project management to your own organization."

Currently there are over 285,000 PMI members world wide and over 311,000 certified Project Management Professionals (PMP). This strategic partnership between IIT and Innova Strategies partners two organizations, which have their own unique strengths. Innova Strategies is well known for their strong training profiles and panel of industry experts. IIT has been in the training industry for many years and continues to have very close relationships with the state universities in Sri Lanka as well as two of the leading universities in the United Kingdom, which are the University of Westminster, and the University of Keele.

In conclusion Mr. Dharmawardane stated, " I am confident that our partnership will create the perfect synergy for participants of this course to gain the maximum benefits with regards to Project Management Certification."
