SVP spreads seasonal cheer

By Hiranthi Fernando

It was party time for the underprivileged elders of Thimbirigasyaya Parish earlier this month. The annual Christmas treat organized by the St. Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) of St. Theresa's Church is a much awaited event for these elders who have few pleasures in the evening of their lives.

About 40 elders were gathered together at the parish hall that evening, some with children or grandchildren, making a total of about sixty. Before the merrymaking started the elders were given their monthly grant by the SVP members.

The evening's programme started with a short prayer by the priest followed by games. Seated in a circle the elders enjoyed a game of passing the parcel with a difference, using a tin of marbles instead of a parcel. Each one was given a marble, which was put into the tin when they got out.

Next they enjoyed a session of Baila dancing. One lady even danced holding on to her crutch. She was thrilled to be one of the winners of the Baila competition and receive a prize.

Refreshments were served to all and this was followed by a time of fellowship. Finally, the Christmas gifts were presented by the priest and the enjoyable evening was concluded.
