Playb<ck - Lankan styles mixed with modern music

By The Rebel Maniac

We've often found ourselves in situations where the person we love the most, leave us for good. But, what if we have this one last chance to get them back?

“Thaarakaawi”, the debut single of PLAYB<CK, released this month, is all about such a situation. Described as "dream-like", the song combines Sri Lankan styles with modern music and offers something new and different.

PLAYB<CK was formed about two years ago in Melbourne, Australia, when a few friends, who have been playing music since they were small, got together to play at private Sri Lankan functions.

PLAYB<CK consist of Shehan Peiris, Sajith Jayaratne, Roshan Pitigala and Dwijendra Senaratne. Among the four, they play guitar, bass, keyboard, violin, saxophone, drums and even oboe. For live events PLAYB<CK is backed by Keith Weerasinghe on drums and Lelani Jayasinghe on vocals.

"We play mainly Sri Lankan songs catering to Lankan crowds in Melbourne, but we try to present these songs in a different manner, bringing into it our own ideas, interpretations and essentially our own style", the band members explain. They add, "We are currently working on a few other songs. They are in Sinhala, but there's this modern twist to them, that we believe is quite interesting."

“Thaarakaawi”, our first song talks about anyone's last chance to get back the one he loves the most. This is something a lot of us can relate to," they say.

The first of many to come, “Thaarakaawi” is produced by AJ (Legazy) and mixed and mastered by Eranga Jayawansa (Slaker Productions). The song is written by PLAYB<CK and Sisira Dissanayake with music composed by the band members themselves.
