The book characters I'd like to meet
12 – 14 years

By Yasiru Mutukumarana (14 years) Rahula College, Matara

Since I was a little boy, I lived in the world of fairies and heroes which was always floating in the dreams of the authors of different ages, minds and countries.

Whenever I had an odd sort of mystery to solve, I thought "what would Sherlock Holmes do in this situation?" And I went in hot

pursuit behind the thief. Though the absence of the dress and a hand lens did not make me look like Sherlock Holmes, I was him in my mind. He is my favourite book character that I like to meet.

From the fairyland, I would like to meet Naughty Amelia Jane. Although she is naughty, she is a genius.
The teenagers I like the most to have a chat with are the famous detectives, Hardy Brothers. I love their comedies and adventures. Even yesterday, when I was asleep, I had tea with them in a café on Mars!
As for genius kids (like me!), I would like to meet Sophie – the little philosopher. I like her very much with a little respect in my mind.

If I tried writing all about my dream characters, I'll have to buy a big book to write them all. So I'll let them be in my heart with me.

My biggest surprise

9 – 11 years

By Fathima Shahani (11 years), Ilma International School

The biggest surprise I had in my life is that I won a prize in the Funday Times. I didn't expect that I would win the 1st prize for my essay 'My favourite wild animal' for the age group 9 – 11 years. It happened two years ago.

When I was in Pakistan I wrote the essay and sent it. After two weeks my grandmother phoned me and told me that my essay was published and I won a prize.

I couldn't believe my ears. I was overjoyed when I heard it. The next day when I went to my school in Pakistan, I showed it to my principal.

My surprise was double when my principal announced my name in the assembly and I got a prize for that essay. My happiness was double! Whenever I think of it this vivid picture comes to my mind.

The games I like to play

8 years and below

By Hrithika Sarvodayan (6 years), Methodist College

There are indoor games and outdoor games. Monopoly, chess and card games are my favourite indoor games. I play these games on rainy days. At times I win but when I lose, I get upset.

It is very interesting to play outdoor games. It is mostly house step I play in school. It needs a lot of jumping. There are times I miss the step and fall. I may get hurt but I quickly get over it. These games give a lot of exercise and fun.
