Rain a spoiler at National Youth Sports Festival
Namal Pathirage
reporting from Beliatta
Rain proved a dampener to the Rs. 20 million 20th National Youth Sports Festival at the D.A. Rajapaksa Sports Stadium in Beliatta yesterday.

The Festival was originally scheduled to be held in Badulla but due to fears of rain the venue was shifted to Beliatta. However the rain gods had other ideas as the rain came down in with flashes of lightning in Beliatta too.

However in the women’s long jump event A. Kaushalya of the Kalutara District cleared 4.89 meters to be placed first in this event.

Thundershowers are predicted for the remaining two days of the competition and it is doubtful that any events will be able to be completed.

Plans are also afoot to stage the Festival in Colombo in the coming years.

Over 2000 sportsmen and women have gathered in Beliatta for the event and a grand opening ceremony on Friday with the participation of the Sports Minister Gamini Lokuge, Ports and Aviation Minister Chamal Rajapakse and Minister of Youth Affairs Pavithra Wanniarachchi was held.
