Jail for transporting milch cows

Three men were fined and a jail sentence imposed on them by Kandy Chief Magistrate Sumudu Premchandra for causing cruelty to animals by transporting 26 milch cows in a lorry.

The cattle were confiscated. The order regarding the lorry was to be made later. The accused pleaded guilty to the charges.

They were fined Rs.500 each and a jail sentence of three months imposed on each count. If the fines were not paid a further three months jail sentence was imposed, in default of payment.

The Central Province Deputy Inspector General's Vice Squad took into custody the three suspects at Madawala Junction, Digana on August 29 for transporting these cattle in a lorry causing cruelty to them thereby violating sections of the Cruelty to Animals Act.

The Magistrate quoted Mahatma Gandhi in his judgment saying, "The greatness and morality of a Nation must be judged by the way it treats its animals."

The aggrieved party were the ‘Jayagrahana’ (a social organisation) represented by Attorney
