Strike action
12 – 14 years
By Sithum Ruwan (12 years), Lunuwila R.C. School

I have heard of strikes which happened in the past. One day, my teacher said there are many reasons for a strike. Some are just and some are unjust.

When the cost of living goes up, workers expect a pay hike. If the discussions of the workers failed, the workers take steps for a strike. Sometimes the master or authorities, sack workers without a reasonable cause. Then other workers take strike action.

Strike is a powerful weapon of the workers. Sometimes politicians interfere and worsen the situation. They speak like they are the saviours of the workers.

There was a general strike in our country on July 10. The government says it was unsuccessful. But the workers say that it was successful. In a general strike, the government sector and the private sector come to a standstill.

When teachers strike, schools have to be closed. It is a great loss to the students. When doctors strike the lives of patients are in danger. Sometimes strikes damage public property. It is a selfish and sinful act. If the strikers continue, it affects the development of the country.

A fun carnival

9 –11 years

By Dilshan Amila (10 years), Lunuwila R.C. School

During the last December holidays there was a fun carnival in our school. All the parents, students, past pupils and well-wishers were invited for this carnival. The organizers arranged this carnival during the Christmas season. A past pupil, now a principal of a school, ceremonially opened the carnival. On the very first day there was a large gathering.

There were many fun activities and games for children. The stalls were full of toys, household items, food items, dresses of modern styles, various kinds of plants and many more.

There were two ice-cream vans in the school premises. The past pupils were very busy helping the teachers and the visitors. I tried my best to throw a ring around the duck's neck but I failed. However, it was a very fun carnival.

A visit to the zoo

8 years and below

By Amith Raneesha (8 years), Lunuwila R.C. School

The zoo is a very nice place to go. Many people, especially children like to visit the zoo.Last month, our family members went to the zoo. My father bought the tickets at the entrance. There were many people at the zoo. We walked slowly. The arrows helped us.

We watched beautiful birds, animals and reptiles. We spent a long time inside the 'Min Medura.' There were big and small fish in the tanks. They were very beautiful.

When I saw the cages of lions and tigers, I was frightened. Their eyes are big and fearful. At last we watched the elephants dancing. It was a very happy day for me.
