High-explosive shoes found on Chilaw beach

A pair of shoes with TNT-type explosives introduced into the heels and two walkie-talkies were items found at dawn yesterday, buried in the sand in the beach area opposite a tourist hotel near Kurukuporan in Bangadeniya.

The find was made by the community police unit, Colombo, headed by I M. Karunaratne. His officers found explosives weighing about a kilo, 100 pistol pellets and a pair of Army camouflage trousers.
Officials believe that the same team which buried explosives unearthed near the Chilaw lagoon about two months ago may have buried these items in the beach area this time also.

It is said that a team of Tamil fishermen from Batticaloa had arrived in this area for fishing during which time several vehicles were seen arriving here with unknown people. The fishermen were reported to have left the area after some explosives were found in Chilaw some time ago.

In a raid carried out by police in the area after their departure explosives packed in polythene bags were unearthed by them. However, no arrests could be made said Inspector Jayalath Sunil while investigations continue.
