Prosumer camera
Toys By Ding

In the world of Nikon and Canon SLRs, even veteran camera manufacturers like Olympus and Fuji have a tough time keeping their heads above water. Sony attempted to enter the serious DSLR market with their offering of the Alpha series of cameras, but still have only dented, if done anything at all, to the grip of the two major DSLR brands.

So when Casio announced the Prosumer DSLR like EX-F1 in January this year, they had to have something strong to offer. After all, Fuji dominates the Prosumer market, and the Panasonic FZ50 and its Leica counterpart also have a say, alongside Sony's and Samsung's offerings. And it had. A 60 frames per second burst rate. In comparison, the D3 by Nikon has only 9 FPS capability, whilst the uber-expensive EOS Mark III by Canon can only manage 5.

The EX-F1 can take still photos at 6 mega pixels, and has a 36-432mm equivalent lens with a maximum aperture of 4.6 at the tele end of the zoom range. Sensitivity range is from 100-1600 ISO, and shutter speeds range from 60 seconds, to an incredibly fast 1/40,000th of a second, although what people at shoot at that kind of speeds it left up to your imagination.

Casio has more up its sleeve. Casio calls it a Prosumer camera / camcorder. And this is where one of its unique selling points lie. It can record video at the new 1920x1080 resolution at speeds of upto 60 frames per second, but when you drop the size to 512x384, the frame rates can shoot upto 300.

Yes, it has a fast frame rate. Yes, it has a very techy movie mode. But in a market where the industry standard is on the north side of 10 mega pixels, it's going to be a tough fight to win. And Fuji and the rest won't give up without a bloody one.
