Controversial parliamentarian and Non-Cabinet Minister Mervyn Silva pulled off another of his antics last week by telling the media he had resigned his seat and was awaiting appointment to the Constitutional Council.

Since the media learnt from none other than Mr. Silva that he was quitting as National List MP, there was no further need for clarification. But the news turned out to be a hoax perpetrated by Mr. Silva himself. He turned up in Parliament for the sittings that began this week. He told a group of Government and Opposition MPs who gathered in the lobby “Pissuda, mama ohama moda vedak keranne nehe” (Are you mad. I will not do such a foolish thing).

The response came when a JVP MP asked him a question. Soon after he responded, another Government MP asked “what about your appointment to the Constitutional Council?”“If that comes, I will not only quit my seat in Parliament but also resign as a member of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party,” he said.
