Asoka Peiris - ‘The Legend in our time’ - Appreciation

Our great friend Asoka passed away on Christmas eve, putting a multitude of friends and fans in profound grief. He bagged the Sarasaviya award for the best film actor for his soul-stirring portrayal of school principal in 'Gurugedara'. He was a stage, Tele-drama and film actor of great repute and had the distinction of acting in many foreign films as well. His role of Gajabanda in ‘Samantenna’ and acting the lead role in ‘Amba Yahaluwo’ still lingers in the hearts of tele-drama lovers.

It was Aso's efforts as the first president of the Moratuwa Arts Forum (M.A.F) in its formative days in 1994 that saw the organization emerge as a vibrant & dynamic unit. His charisma and leadership was solely responsible for the successes of the Forum. Amongst the multitude of popular figures in its fold, Asoka was considered the elder statesman, big brother and counselor. Any problem that M.A.F. or an individual member encountered, it was Aso's advice that was sought and he would spontaneously settle any dispute. He never begrudged or envied any person. He was a wonderful human being who yearned for a leisurely evening with a sing song with his children or his close friends whenever his busy professional schedule permitted him.

He was a loyal Old Thomian, a God fearing and Church going Christian who did a great deal of work for his Parish, the Holy Emmanuel Church. In fact he headed the organizing committee for the landmark anniversary celebrations of his Church held on 27th December. But, alas, he was called to eternal rest on the 24th. While the Church Anniversary took place, Aso's body was lying at his home at Mount Road, Moratuwa.

It's ironic that Aso drove all the way to the airport on the 23rd to bring his son Eshantha who was arriving home for Christmas from abroad along with his wife after nine long years. The next day he was gone! Aso, as we all knew, was a devoted family man. His beloved wife Chitra, his sons Prakash, Eshantha and daughter Meneka along with the in-laws and grandchildren will miss him so very much.

We of the Moratuwa Arts Forum will always remember him with much gratitude, for we are what we are today, because of Asoka Peiris.

Thank you Asoka for all what you did for the Moratuwa Arts Forum
