A soldier at the Mannar frontline

The Army was yesterday closing in on Adampan, in Mannar after capturing one kilometre south of the town on Friday and killing at least 33 rebels, a military spokesman said yesterday.

Twelve LTTE cadres and two soldiers were killed in yesterday’s fighting. Troops were yesterday evening consolidating positions captured on Friday evening and came under artillery fire, but they were able to push back the rebels and continue their advance, the spokesman said..

Adampan, located close to the Giant’s Tank, has been a stronghold of the LTTE and heavy fighting has raged for the past three weeks in the area.
