Viharamahadevi Park comes alive with Kala Pola

The popular open air art fair, Kala Pola organized by the George Keyt Foundation in association with John Keells Group comes alive yet again this year on January 20 at the Viharamahadevi Park at Ananda Coomaraswamy Mawatha, Colombo 7. Running for the 15th consecutive year, this year’s event will feature over 300 artists and sculptors who will display their work to an art-loving public amidst music, song and fun.

Now a national event, the Kala Pola was initiated from the European concept of open air summer art fairs which were eagerly anticipated after many cold and dismal winter months.

Chairman of the George Keyt Foundation, Cedric de Silva said that the Kala Pola provides a unique opportunity for hundreds of budding artists and the public alike. “Kala Pola has become one of the most successful, popular and in a way unrivalled events.

It gives us the opportunity to discover the artist, it provides a chance for the public to meet the artists and above all it helps the participants meet each other which is extremely beneficial to them,” he said, adding that it is a boon to these highly talented men and women, some of whom may not be able to exhibit in Colombo’s regular art galleries. The inauguration ceremony for Kala Pola 2008 will be at 10 a.m. and the fair will continue throughout the day.
