Roll over Bandaranaike

A man rolls up the carpet and walks away from the giant statue of the late Prime Minister and SLFP founder, S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike, ironically depicting moves by the present dispensation to downplay the dynasty he left behind.

Where once his birth anniversary on January 8 was a state-sponsored event with his statue at Galle Face Green garlanded by VVIPs, this week's event was a "No Show" by all and sundry. None of the 50-odd Cabinet Ministers turned up, not even the SLFP General Secretary.

Only Western Province Governor Alavi Moulana and Sabaragamuwa Province Governor Reggie Ranatunga were present. None from the Bandaranaike family turned up either.
