M.G.C.N. Gamage of the Sri Lanka Air Force wins the men’s Triple Jump event at the meet.

Wan Lay Chi of Singapore hurled the discus to a distance of 45.39 metres to set up a new meet record on the second day in the women’s discus at the 85th National Athletic Championships of Sri Lanka and the First Inter-District Novices meet continued for the second day at the Sugathadasa Stadium yesterday. The meet reaches its final day today. The three day meet is sponsored by Dialog Telecom.

Wan Lay Chi, one of the 13 foreign competitors taking part in the meet, was in a confident mood as she took her stance, whirled and let fly the discus to overtake B.L.P.N. Wijesundara of Track Master Sports Club, who held the earlier record at 44.17 meters.

On the first day Nadeesha Muthunayake of the Sri Lanka Navy broke her own previous record in the women’s shot-put final with a heave of 14.05 meters on a rain hit day.

With the weather improving the chances are that more Sri Lankans will do well when the meet continues today. At the Inter-District meet Matara, Ratnapura and Kegalle are ahead in the race and it all points to a hot battle between these three districts for honours today.
