Hayleys MGT Knitting Mills wins National Productivity Award

Noteworthy achievements in labour, material, energy and capital productivity indicators in 2006-07 by Hayleys MGT Knitting Mills were acknowledged at national level this week when the Hayleys Group’s world-class knit fabric manufacturing company won joint first place at the National Productivity Awards in the Large Scale Manufacturing category.

The company, which earlier this month became the first local fabric manufacturer to achieve SA8000 Social Accountability standard, beat a representative group of large manufacturing entities in many sectors to take this prestigious accolade.

“This is the perfect reward for all the hard work, innovative ideas and commitment by our productivity teams,” said Hayleys MGT’s Joint Managing Director Bandula Weerasinghe in a press release issued by the company. “A feature of our productivity initiatives is the buy-in at all levels including the production floor.”

Hayleys MGT has the unique distinction of retaining more than 90 per cent of its work force since its inception in 1994. Value addition per employee in 2006-07 reached Rs 1.83 million on sales of Rs 5.4 billion.

The key productivity ratios used at Hayleys MGT are value-added to turnover, value-added per man hour, value-added to stock holding cost, value-added to material cost, return on investment and value-added per employee.
