Chikungunya on the rise in the hill country

Central province Health officials warn that the number of Chikungunya cases is on the increase even though there is no sign of an outbreak.

Central Province Director of Health Dr. Shanthi Samarasinghe said the disease was increasing rapidly especially in the Matale district and there was also a threat of it spreading in Kandy.

“There have been about 30 cases of Chikungunya within the last month. But there has been a drop in the number of dengue cases with two being reported from the Central Province. But the public should still be vigilant about their surroundings, because of the rise in Chikumgunya cases.Kandy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Asoka Senerath said a few cases of Chikungunya have been reported around Kandy.
