Political Column
  CWC’s Cock won’t fight
  By Our Political Editor

Like the cockerel, their official symbol, leaders of the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) crowed aloud last Sunday about quitting the Government. As their Vice President, M.S. Sellasamy declared to The Sunday Times, the party's Politburo that met in Kotagala (near Hatton) demanded an apology from President Mahinda Rajapaksa if they were wanted in the Government.
5th Column
  Parties and cakes…who celebrates what?
  By Rypvanwinkle

"Thaaththa," Bindu Udagedera asked, "what is all this fuss about a new party?" "Which new party is that?" Bindu's father Percy wanted to know.
"Why, thaaththa, the party that has been formed by the Greens and Uncle Mangala…" Bindu recalled.

Situation Report
MiGs loaded with millions in mega frauds
  By Iqbal Athas

The Sunday Times exclusive revelation on December 3 last year of alleged corruption in one of Sri Lanka's largest military deals, the procurement of four old but "life extended" MiG-27 fighter jets and overhaul to four others worth billions of rupees or millions of dollars from Ukraine has had its sequel.
The Economic Analysis
CB losing its credibility and independence
  By the Economist
The independence and credibility of the Central Bank is vital for the country’s economic prosperity. It is indeed most unfortunate that the credibility of the Central Bank has come into question recently as it vitiates its role as the apex institution of the financial system.
Thoughts from London
ASEAN: Were we blocked or did we decline?
  By Neville de Silva

It will be two years today since the assassination of Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar. Much will surely be written in the media these days about him and the foul deed that robbed the country of one who entered the world of politics, perhaps reluctantly at first, and paid for it with his life.

Issue of the week
  Musharraf trapped in cyclic politics
  By Ameen Izzadeen
As both India and Pakistan celebrate 60 years of their independence from British rule, both countries are making news for different reasons. Sixty years after Independence, India is an economic success story and an emerging superpower while Pakistan remains a political mess that it has been throughout.
Focus on Rights
Medical professionals and torture; defensive responses
  By Kishali Pinto Jayawardena

The Sri Lanka Medical Council has apparently taken remarkably ill advised umbrage in regard to a previous column of mine titled "Collusion of medical professionals in torture' published on July 29, 2007.

Inside the glass house
Moon rises over White House .......
By Thalif Deen at the united nations

When the US-led coalition charged into Iraq more than five years ago, the United Nations was left out in the cold. Assuming that the Security Council would not authorize a military attack on Iraq -- an assumption that may have proved right -- the US circumvented and defied the world body by going to war without a UN mandate.
