Grameen Bank founder to lecture here next week

Founder of the Grameen Bank and the winner of the Nobel Peace Prize last year, Prof. Mohammad Yunus of Bangladesh will arrive in Sri Lanka on Wednesday to give a series of lectures on his highly successful and internationally recognized barefoot banking practices to pull the poor out of poverty.

Prof. Yunus will meet President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Thursday morning, followed by private meetings with various people and organizations. On Friday he will address the Micro Finance Network Conference at the Central Bank Auditorium at Rajagiriya on ‘Micro Financing’. It is organized by the National Development Trust Fund and chaired by Prof. Jagath Wickramasinghe.

On Saturday the Grameen Bank founder will deliver the keynote speech at the regional summit of the South Asian Federation of Journalists’ Associations (SAFJA) at the Cinnamon Grand on the topic ‘Peace and Poverty’. The SAFJA conference will be declared open by Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake. Media Minister Anura Priyadharshana Yapa will be the guest of honour.

The theme of the two day SAFJA conference is ‘Peace, Poverty Alleviation and the Media’ and will be attended by 150 journalists from other SAARC countries and 100 media personnel from Sri Lanka, organizers said. Dr Yunus will be interviewed by various media organizations on Sunday prior to his departure the same day.
