Best ‘Corporate Citizen’ awards from Chamber of Commerce in November

Awards will also be given for the first time to special projects recognising outstanding efforts in CSR projects under different avenues.

The Ceylon Chamber of Commerce (CCC) is organizing the ‘10 Best Corporate Citizens’ awards for this year on November 29, Chairman of the awards committee, Prof. Lakshman R. Watawala told reporters this week.

This year, the main awards for the top three corporates are to be given in two categories, ‘Group Companies, ‘Multinational Companies’ and ‘Corporates in the ‘Financial Sector’ and ‘Single-Entity Companies.’

Awards will also be given for the first time to special projects recognising outstanding efforts in CSR projects under different avenues.

“CSR is a very important aspect to all companies as we want to give the message to the public that companies not only make profits but benefit a variety of communities as well,” Prof. Watawala said, adding that the CSR awards was being organised because most organizations were engaged in CSR work without any recognition.

“Sri Lanka is a role model to many other countries because we do not have child labour,” Prof Watawala said.

Further adding, “this was especially seen in the garment sector where they were able to get the GSP+ facility from the EU as a result of maintaining very high labour standards.”

The CSR Awards criteria look at Environment, Community Relations and Society, Employee Relations, Customer and Supplier Relations and Economic Performance, while the evaluation will be through an independent evaluation panel and a panel of judges.
