Maris Stella (Athletics) Quadrangular bounces back…

Maris Stella College, Negombo, has produced some outstanding sportsmen at National level. Be it athletics, football, cricket etc.
Fast bowler Graham Labrooy, Melvin Mallawaratchie (athletics) Benildus Fernando (football) etc.

“Last year their athletic wing held a quadrangular track and field meet between Royal, S. Thomas’ Mt. Lavinia and Trinity in their own backyard. It proved an instant success” said the President of Old Maristonian Association.

He said the chairman of the athletic project Damith Jayakody and his committee did an excellent job. Giving that much needed competition for the juveniles drawn from the four schools at grassroots level. For all age groups- under-11, 13, 15, 17, and 19. Though the Maristorians emerged overall champions. But that’s forgotten. But helped harness talent among the four schools. For the betterment of track, and field, sports. Also to bring about togetherness. That’s what sport is all about.

Bro. Mervyn Perera, Rector of the Maris Stella gave all support for this project staged in a carnival atmosphere. The Sri Lanka Amateur Athletic Association gave all encouragement to make it a reality.

Hemalal Priyankara, medal winner at the Kathmandu SAF games was a guest of honour, year 2006. This year it will be held also at the college grounds on July 28. - BW
