North and East get separate flags

By A.T.M.Gunananda

Two separate flags for the Northern and Eastern provinces were unveiled last week in Trincomalee. Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrema, Governor of the Eastern Province and acting Governor of the Northern Province, handed over the Northern Province flag to the council’s Chief Secretary S. Rangarajah, and the Eastern Province flag to its Chief Secretary Herat Abeyeweera at a ceremony on Tuesday at the Governor's Secretariat.

Eagle, Fish and Lion symbols are in the Eastern flag. Eagle symbolises Trincomalee, fish Batticaloa and lion Amparai. The Eastern Province comprises these three districts. The new flag for the north has the symbol sun in the middle of the flag.
