Police HQ cracks the whip on errant cops

Police Headquarters has finally decided to crack the whip on police officers who are allegedly working hand-in-glove with underworld gangs, especially in Colombo North, which is increasingly becoming a hotbed of crime.

As a first step, sources said a ‘no nonsense’ Senior Superintendent has been put in charge of the division recently and it has also begun removing OICs who are notoriously linked to the underworld. One such OIC has already been removed from the division. The daily incomes of these allegedly crooked OICs is said to be running to millions of rupees.

Contacted in this regard SSP Jayantha Kulatillake said he had no special formula, but vowed to bring to book who ever breaks the law.

The Sunday Times however learns that whatever measures being taken by the Police Headquarters may come a cropper due to a Minister and a Deputy Minister actively cultivating the underworld. In the case of the Minister his two sons are said to be even muscling into the underworld.

Sources said these politicians were even closely linked to the recently gunned down underworld boss Prins Column of Modera and at least one of them had gone to the funeral of the man. Politicians’ involvement with even extortion gangs came to light in Kiribathgoda recently.
