Exhibition for Global Road Safety Week

It was indeed an unusual scene - a Police Inspector seated before a group of schoolchildren talking to them about road safety, not in a police station but right in the hub of the National Hospital, the premises of the Accident and Orthopaedic Service.

This was part of activities organized in connection with the first Global Road Safety Week (April 23-29) declared by the United Nations in a bid to help reduce road accidents.

Stalls, quizzes, action stations where not only the 110 rescue and emergency service (pre-hospital care) but also first-aid techniques were demonstrated and role play was used to create indelible images of road rules were all part of the three-day programme held at the NHSL.

The programme was organized by the Trauma Secretariat of the Health Ministry and NHSL's Accident Service, in collaboration with the Police, the Health Education Bureau, the National Road Safety Secretariat of the Transport Ministry and the Friends of the Accident Service. Simultaneous exhibitions were held at the Colombo South Teaching Hospital and the Kalutara and Horana Hospitals.
