Evening rains during Vesak

During the Vesak season, showers may prevail during the late evenings in many areas in the island, Met Department Deputy Director S.H. Kariyawasam said.

“There won’t be rain in the eastern parts of the country but there is a great possibility of heavy rain accompanied by thunder and lightning in other parts of the country. Meanwhile strong winds may prevail in localized areas,” he said.

Met Department meteorologist Ajith Weerawardene, said the inter-monsoon period will continue till the end of April or the beginning of May.

Thundershowers may be experienced over the Western, Uva, Sabaragamuwa and Central Provinces. Parts of the North- Western and the North Central Provinces and the Galle district may also receive rain during the afternoon and evenings, he said.

“Usually the April thunderstorms which are called bakmaha akunu in Sinhala are very strong and people should take safety precautions and possibly stay indoors during these storms” he said.
