Anti-dengue campaign a success: CMC

‘No to D & C’ - the dengue and chikungunya prevention campaign - appears to be a success as a fewer number of dengue cases were reported in Colombo compared to the large number last year, a top CMC official said.

“In April 2006, 46 dengue cases were reported but this April the number had come down to 6, which is a great achievement.

“It proves the general public has been very concerned about the environment and the campaign encouraged the people,” Colombo Municipal Council Chief Medical Officer Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said.

The campaign was held last Friday. The ‘No to D & C’ walk, a part of the dengue and chikungunya prevention campaign where more than 1250 participants including volunteers, CMC staff, school children and private sector representatives carried slogans and handed over leaflets to residents reminding them epidemics could be prevented by having a mosquito-free environment.

He said the public could call on tel. no. 2696594 and inform of any mosquito nuisance in their areas and CMC health officers would be ready to take immediate action.
